









North Bengal Medical College & Hospital: the journey since 1967 at a glance
North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, located in the foothills of the mighty Himalayas, is the nearest Medical College to Sandakphu, the place with highest altitude in West Bengal and from where the best panoramic view of the Sleeping Buddha, the mighty Kangchendzőnga can be cherished. The pollution free refreshment with abundant greenery, with adjoining tea gardens and the unending Balason River Basin are some of its assets, which make this Medical College unique in all respect.
In August 1967, North Bengal Medical College (NBMC) started its journey under affiliation of the North Bengal University (NBU). After establishment of the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS), it came under the WBUHS. Classes for the first batch of students started on 06.11.1967 as makeshift arrangement at Jackson Medical School, Jalpaiguri. In 1972, finally from the 5th batch onwards, students shifted to their campus at Sushrutanagar for the MBBS course. The present NBMCH campus is spread over a sprawling 161 acres and connected by long corridors the total length of which is 2.6 km. The North Bengal Dental College, College of Nursing and the Nursing Training School are also located in the same campus. After the inauguration of the hospital in 1976, the college was recognized by the Medical Council of India in 1978.
150 MBBS students got admitted every year and so many post graduate courses of different disciplines and different technician courses also run by the Institution.
The medical college which is proud to serve a population of more than 15 million people with the goal which is embossed in its official logo “Sevitium do Populum” i.e. “Service to the people” is now waiting to be elevated soon to a Super Specialty Hospital.
